here are a few school ideas i came up with a while back. i promise i’m not just trying to brag – i love finding ideas on other sites and i thought i would offer up mine to fellow seekers. and if you have stuff you’ve come up with – post it! i’d love some new inspiration!

here is a number line. i cut out the numbers from a magazine, glued them to card stock and contact papered it. i also made several of each number so that they can match them, add them, subtract them, find the missing ones, and just play with them.

i did the alphabet the same way. they match the capital letters to lower-case letters, put them in order, put the missing ones in the correct places, play memory by turning them over; read and build simple words.
and speaking of playing memory…

when we started learning money recognition and values i made these…

yes, that is actual money taped to card stock. i wanted them to learn actual coins, not just the plastic stuff. for each coin there is a card with the “heads” side and one with the “tails” side. when we play the game, we match the coin to the value, and coin to coin. as they flip over the coin, i tell them the name of the coin and ask them or tell them the value and then they hope to get a “match” of the value with the correct coin. they stretch their memory, take turns, learn coin recognition, coin names, and the coin values all while thinking they’re just playing a game. this is one that’s a hit – they ask for it pretty frequently.

Oh I love the number line and the alphabet cut from magazines! Great idea! I’m sooo stealing it for Carter
The money thing is way cool also.. I need to do something like that for Madison b/c she’s still struggling a bit to get all of that right!

mandy-don’t think for a second that they have it down. after, literally, 7 back-to-back games yesterday with them i finally said, “alright, y’all can play by yourselves.” and it was a constant, “what’s the biggest one, mama? what’s the brown one, mama? what’s the littlest one?” they don’t have it, but i feel like just exposure will help!
and i think carter would love the letters and numbers – they’re so bright-and you could cut up old magnets and stick ‘em to the back, too, for fridge fun.
k.t.-i can’t wait to see your ideas! but no rush, and no pressure. the wall art idea is awesome!! i’m so stealing it!

You’re a genius Suzanne! I loved this kind of thing back when mine were little! Such a joy to see the learning take place!

Hey girl, although I earned a paycheck teaching children for 18 years, you are a natural. Some school district is really missing out, but your kids aren’t.

Great ideas thanks. Mine are older but I can use the memory game for outlines of countries and their names – or for sums! Brilliant. Thanks.
